Trappists of Westmalle

About Trappists of Westmalle
The Westmalle Brewery is renowned for its Trappist beer and the rich tradition of the abbey. Three years ago, retail customers presented them with a new request: the beer had to be available in clips, cardboard carriers in which four or six bottles are securely locked in place.
Hans Poels, responsible for logistics, explains:
“We used to sell only individual bottles or crates of our Trappist beer. Until our retail customers asked us to sell our beer in clips. We were open to the suggestion, but we didn't have the space to integrate an extra machine. The alternative was to apply them manually.”
Because applying clips requires flexibility in planning and its own staff are already fully deployed, the brewery quickly sought an external partner. The choice of A-kwadraat was obvious.
How we strengthen Westmalle Trappists together
Our team supports Trappists from Westmalle in various areas. Specifically, five employees from A-kwadraat help to install clips in the maturing cellar and assemble multipacks. In addition, employees from assist in the cheese factory and with packing export boxes.
"The collaboration is going smoothly," says Hans. "Two people from A-kwadraat work completely independently in the cheese factory, without supervision. They coat the cheese and turn it several times a day. Communication and collaboration with our staff is going very smoothly."
This support allows our own staff to focus on core tasks and ensures that production runs smoothly and flawlessly.
How we work together
From introduction to full integration
The collaboration began with an exploratory visit to the production halls of A-kwadraat. Our business unit manager and head foreman then visited Trappisten van Westmalle to make concrete arrangements. Together, we set up a work location with platforms, roller conveyors, scissor lifts, and equipment such as label printers and scanners. Our supervisors also obtained forklift certification in advance.
Hans: “There is a lot of mutual respect. We know most of the permanent employees and supervisors well. When there are gifts at Easter and Sinterklaas, no distinction is made. A great example of inclusion."
Results to be proud of
The use of A-kwadraat has a direct impact on production.
“After a short training period, the output exceeded expectations. Approximately 40 pallets per day are fitted with clips, which amounts to around 40,000 clips per week. And that's almost flawless."
The quality control department confirmed that the clips were applied almost 100% correctly. Even during the coronavirus crisis, when production temporarily came to a standstill, respect for A-kwadraat grew. "At that time, we spent a whole day applying clips in the bottling plant with all the staff. Since then, our respect has only grown," says Hans.
The added value of A-kwadraat
At Trappists of Westmalle, it's not just about applying clips. It's about reliability, precision, and a team that truly grows with the brewery.
- Flexibility
Hans Poels: "The schedule is followed closely and the work is done quickly. They contribute ideas when there are problems and are very flexible."
reliability Our employees ensure that every clip is applied correctly, almost flawlessly, week after week.- Precision and quality
Our A-kwadraat employees work meticulously and independently. Every action counts, from correctly clicking the clips into place to coating and turning cheese.
